Up ahead, said 'buddy' leads the way with fluttery movements, almost as if pushed along by a passing breeze. Its body looks so fragile, bending and flopping about. But as soon as it comes into contact with the bamboo that surrounds them, the group is subjected to a viewing of just how fast those bamboo stalks can fall.[break][break]

"I'm honestly kinda surprised that it didn't cut through the paper." Her backpack, she can understand given how Mesprit would've beaten it into submission for disturbing their nap. "And the way it's just... chilling. I thought it'd be best to reunite it with its family or something."[break][break]

If Ultra Beasts had such notions to begin with. And if she ignored the other glaring problem that she'd have no idea where said family would be. Well, Mesprit seems to be rather at ease around the Kartana despite the havoc it seems to wreak upon the ecosystem. And they even gesture towards the Ultra Beast, grinning as they zip over to give Howard a brief tug.[break][break]

"Maybe we'll find those other craters with inscriptions on the way, y'know?"

Kartana were stupid and Howard hated them. fern delaney had stashed one in his pile of paperwork back at headquarters, and Howard had gotten his desk split in half before noticing what his fellow admin had done. Since then, he had sworn off the paper-thin monsters.

"Little lady, what report are you talking about?" The admin parsed his lips as they trekked through the bamboo forest that made up a large swath of this dimension. There were so many reports between League and Rocket at this point that the admin could do little but rub his forehead and groan. "Wait, it was in the report? Why're you reading reports?"

Probably stealing from Isaac Merlo's mailbox again, knowing her. Howard was shocked that the kid could even reach Isaac's mailbox.

"Huh." Howard sniffed the air as Eris's Kartana split the forest apart with its very existence. Kartana was a weapon, but it was a different type of weapon from the ones the admin was familiar with. It was not a weapon with intent. It was not built or designed to wage war. It simply existed, and that was too much. "Storm's coming."

The archaeologist refused to elaborate.

The other connotations of his questions are completely lost on her.[break][break]

At the very mention of storm, Eris stops to sniff the air too. It doesn't quite smell like that good old ozone that comes before, but she has to assume that this planet doesn't operate in the same way that their world does. Looking up to the skies, she can only spy that endless yellow without a single cloud marring its sight.[break][break]

But then, a black chunk falls from the heavens, piercing through the bamboo thicket with an audible 'CRACK' before landing in the earth with a thud. Mesprit is by her side in an instant, eyes narrowing as the ground beneath them begins to rumble. The bamboo begin to sway, nervously bowing down as a strange shoot emerges from the earth. And it only grows taller and taller, slowly but steadily rising to tower above them all.

Oh, right. That report. He had made a copy to throw at oscar clayton, but it wouldn't surprise Howard if it was currently being used as a coaster for whatever Oscar spiked his coffee with in the morning.

"You've got this, little lady." Howard beamed with pride as they trudged through the bamboo forest. Learning the Megalopolan script was hard, but if Eris kept at it, he was confident that she could do it. Time and commitment were the salves for ignorance. "Keep at it, a-"

The Celesteela rose from the ground like an elevator ascending from a shaft. The size of the Ultra Beast was striking, but Howard was less afraid of it than he was of the Kartana. Celesteela was a big thing. He could deal with big things. Evil paper, not so much.

"Little lady..." He whispered to Eris. "Back up, slowly..."

Suddenly, the wind began to pick up.

[attr="class","eris109"]When faced by a strikingly large, living bamboo alien, one might think that backing up and fleeing is the correct option. And she really would've taken it if not for way that Mesprit adamantly holds onto her arm and chirps. Even the Kartana seems to jitter, flapping erratically against the sudden winds before it folds itself, carefully slipping into one of the many grooves that the Celesteela possesses.[break][break]

The winds grow ever stronger. What was once a light breeze brushing across her skin now rakes at her clothes, its pull growing stronger by the second as a distant howl becomes more and more prominent. Finally, she dares to look at the beast that lurks behind them, only to blink and whip her head right back around.[break][break]

"It's probably better if we go with it." She's most definitely picked up what Mesprit's putting down and she rushes up to the Celesteela, holding onto it for dear life as its engines begin to light up. "C'mon! Hurry!"[break][break]

Of course, the pixie isn't cruel enough to leave their ~~source of Yeggo waffles~~ precious, fragile friend behind. Zipping over to him, Mesprit grabs onto his hand and tugs him along with a psychic pull.

"Little lady, it's a ROCKET SHIP!" He screamed over the roar of the storm. He couldn't believe that this was the path being considered. Worst case scenario, they'd die. Best case scenario, they'd live. "Little ladyyyyyyyyyyyyy!"

Howard's screams increased in both volume and octave as Mesprit dragged him along through the air. It was easy to underestimate the Mesprit's psychic abilities, especially given its ability to tug Howard for extended periods of time.

He was unceremoniously tossed into one of the ridges of the Celesteela as it continued its ignition. The Ultra Beast shook as it launched itself off the ground.

"ERISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

The Celesteela flew through the sky, arcing as it attempted to outrun the storm. Several sharp stones peppered the air, resulting in a monstrous maelstrom completely inhospitable to life.

[attr="class","eris109"]There were two ways for them to attempt to escape - By foot, by which the storm would easily catch up to them within a tight bamboo forest and shred them to pieces. Or by way of a 'rocket ship', which could at least accelerate freely and dodge whatever the storm regurgitates at it. Add on Mesprit's Future Sight and they've got a somewhat decent defense going on, many of the larger stones blasted to pieces with well aimed psychic shots.[break][break]

But this isn't a complete protective barrier, shrapnel still finds its way through, scraping against steel edges and eliciting shrill cries as they wedge themselves into small gaps in the Celesteela's armour. Add on the relentless pull of the howling storm behind them and the beast begins to struggle, its engines throttling as its flight path begins to waver.[break][break]

"What do you think, Mes?"[break][break]

Nature isn't their domain, and oh do they have words to say about that. They seem mildly annoyed at the way that this storm seems eager to trail behind them. Or perhaps, that's actually meant to be directed towards the underperformance of their escape shuttle.[break][break]

"Mmm..."[break][break]

Either way, things aren't looking too good and the Celesteela probably won't last for much longer.

Of course Mesprit didn't know how to rectify this situation. Stupid idiot sprite. All it did was scream at Howard and eat all of his food, but he had to deal with its incessant wailing now.

Frankly, he liked it more as a Pichu. At least it was cute when it ate his waffles then.

"Why are you asking Mesprit!?" Howard screamed at Eris over the roar of the Celesteela's engines and the ferocious storm. The fact that Eris was willing to consult with a lake spirit over matters of the weather was baffling. At least Eris would get a nice cushion of psychic energy if they fell to their deaths.

Lucky her. Maybe if Howard was lucky Mesprit would remember him too.

"WE'RE GONNA CRAAAAAAAAAASH!" The Celesteela dipped down towards the earth. "LITTLE LAAAAAAAAAAAA-"

BOOOOOOOM!

[attr="class","eris109"]It's a miracle that she could even hear Howard over all this wind. Though, probably not so much for Mesprit as they briefly look over and give him the stink eye.[break][break]

But they won't hold that grudge for long. As the tip of the Celesteela begins to droop, Eris begins to shimmy her way upwards, gently sliding her fingers into one of the grooves and hooking a nail right under what feels to be simple parchment. And it yields to her touch, bending as she begins to pull it right out of the gap.[break][break]

"Mes!"[break][break]

Pink envelopes them, ripping them free of gravity's shackles as the Celesteela is left to its own demise. Crashing against the earth, its steely joints creak as the storm begins to pull at it, the winds wrapping its tongue around it and swallows it whole. But Mesprit, on the other hand, drops the group right behind a giant boulder, screeching as a Mystical Power works at full force to resist the greedy tempest.

What was more impressive than Mesprit's ability to defy the storm was how many different curses Howard could spew from his mouth in the span of twenty seconds.

Spoiler: it was a lot. Most of them were in languages that neither Eris nor her Mesprit would understand, and the latter was an ancient demigod known for chaining a primordial aspect of creation itself alongside its brethren. With that in mind, the archaeologist's string of curses was both awe-inspiring and humbling.

Sure, this storm was capable of bringing down a Celesteela, but Howard's curses were louder than the storm itself.

"MY FOOOOOOOOOOD!" Howard screamed as one of Eris's lunchboxes flew off into the storm. "NOOOO!"

The Celesteela exploded as it crashed, adding a great sound effect to the backdrop as the admin mourned his food.

"Little lady..." Howard turned to Mesprit and Eris. "We're doomed."

Without food, it was, in fact, so over.

[attr="class","eris109"]At some point, she begins hearing voices in the wind, convinced that perhaps there is a god in the storm that is attempting to exterminate them for trespassing. Then she looks back to Howard, and realises that he is the one speaking the divine tongue and ascending this very moment.[break][break]

All it takes is one final sacrifice for him to transcend. It's almost like watching a giant pluck a bountiful harvest from the fields, except much less severe. Well, incredibly trivial compared to that analogy to be honest. But to Howard, it must feel that way. Despite his incredible material gains, this man would probably start eating dirt and or starve himself within days.[break][break]

Perhaps, he would need to invest in hiring an accountant himself.[break][break]

It is here that nature must be satisfied. After ripping the greatest bits of hope from one's life and filling their stomach, the winds decide to bear in a new direction, a slight deviation sparing them even as it continues to reap and wrecks its surroundings.[break][break]

"We aren't doomed." It feels so absurd having to tell him that. With the storm gradually passing and the winds dying down, they're more than likely able to find their way out of here and restock as needed.[break][break]

But Mesprit too begins to scream, wailing over the unimaginable loss of the lunchbox she'd packed.[break][break]

"Oh for f- WE AREN'T DOOMED!"
